The physical presentation of The New Together project concludes with the exhibition of three collaborative works created following Ngallery's open call for remote co-creation during the Covid-19 pandemic. The exhibition entitled "The New Together Vol. III'' will be presented from Wednesday, November 16, until Saturday, December 10, 2022, at the hybrid space of Ngallery.

During the pandemic lockdown, contemporary music composer and sound researcherNicoleta Chatzopoulou’s Ngallery made an open call for participation in an art project withthe sole prerequisite being long-distance collaboration. Composers, musicians, artists, performers, directors, writers, scientists and intellectuals from all over the world were invited and challenged to create collaborative works, overcoming the impossibility of physical presence in the same space.

Although restrictions were largely lifted and mobility restored, the art world is struggling to recover from a global event that has brought enormous economic damage and uncertainty. At the same time, we are facing a new unprecedented energy crisis, forcing many of our fellow human beings to impose a self-lockdown in order to meet the cost of living. The New Together project, born as a reaction and response to the challenges for artistic creation, communication and presentation caused by the pandemic, remains extremely relevant in a highly critical present and a dystopian future that stretches before us.

The following works are exhibited at the third and final edition of The New Together project:

“5walls with Anna Pangalou”, Longform video; 4 recordings of extended Zoom calls with no prescribed time limits

Tim Tsang x Anna Pangalou

During May and June 2020, during the height of the pandemic for many countries, Tim and Anna decided to meet together virtually from their homes in Los Angeles and Athens, without any prescribed time limits, and extensively carried out longform conversations filled with honesty, sincerity, with a curiosity toward new forms of knowledge and being. Carried out as a quiet, un-advertised form of action, they met a total of four times, with each meeting being anywhere from 2 to 4 hours long. Topics covered included cybernetics, sociology, art, music, creative life, loneliness, life struggles, culture, history - seamlessly weaving in and out from the societal to the personal. After the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, Tim and Anna spent their fourth conversation in complete silence for over one hour, after listening to a recording together of Mahler’s “Kindertotenlieder” (“Songs on the Death of Children”).

“Stitching Borders”, Installation

Constantine Katsiris x Louisa Stylianidi

The work of Louisa and Constantine is centered around the idea of maps and borders, creating soundscapes and landscapes. In this collaboration, they worked together to think about the lines of borders and how borders can be changed. Louisa’s sewn pieces are of drawings she made that are thought of as map-poems. Visualising sound and also trying to sew land together or trying to sew the sea with the land is almost impossible and that “sewing” of land creates marks. These marks then become the drawings of the sewn pieces. Louisa also questions the materiality of land, of clay and of material, considering the arduous, craft-like process of sewing. Constantine’s sound is of different places that he “sews” together and reflect his photographs that are map-like, showing the remnants of different places and spaces visited.

“Losing Touch”, Micro-short film

Mavra Peponi x Nicoleta Chatzopoulou

Synopsis: A cat in spring– quarantine

This micro-short film was created through the remote collaboration of director Mavra Peponi and composer Nicoleta Chatzopoulou during the quarantine of 2020. It was screened at festivals in Europe and America, and in 2022 won the Experimental Edition Award at Oaxaca Film Fest.

The New Together Vol. II

Sunday 12/09 – Sunday 10/10/2021 @Ngallery

As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to affect the arts, Ngallery continues to explore the new challenges for artistic creation and mobility, by presenting the second edition of The New Together project. The exhibition of the collaborative work “Empirical Reality” opens on Sunday, September 12, and it will run until Sunday, October 10, 2021.

Vocalist Anna Pangalou, natural sciences educator Georgina Spyres and artist Ryat Yezbick remotely collaborated throughout the pandemic to create “Empirical Reality”. They used the element of water as a vehicle to observe the  interconnections of our universe and the tenuous nature of our species. They created a collection of works focusing on water and its properties that connect them to nature, to each other, to their beliefs and to their conscious and subconscious intentions. “Empirical Reality” invites the viewer to consider our relationship to water as a life force, and our permeable relationship with all it contains.

During the pandemic lockdown, contemporary music composer and sound researcher Nicoleta Chatzopoulou’s Ngallery made an open call for participation in an art project with the sole prerequisite being long-distance collaboration. Composers, musicians, artists, performers, directors, writers, scientists and intellectuals from all over the world were invited and challenged to create collaborative works, overcoming the impossibility of physical presence in the same space.

The first exhibition of works created for The New Together project was presented with big success at Ngallery in October 2020, raising a heated and necessary conversation about the (post-)pandemic arts landscape.

The New Together project aims to explore and define the new conditions of artistic creation, the new needs for communication between creative people and new possibilities for the presentation and diffusion of art.

The exhibition “The New Together Vol. II” will be open by appointment only from Sunday, September 12 to Sunday, October 10, with free admission. For appointments during the exhibition opening hours (Monday to Friday: 10 am-2 pm & 5-8 pm – weekends: 12-5 pm) please contact us by email at ngallery18@gmail.com. To fully experience the work at your convenience, the recommended duration of the visit is 1 hour. The exhibition will be accompanied by parallel actions with the artists, which will be announced on Ngallery social media. Ngallery operates in accordance with the government pandemic guidelines.

The New Together Vol. I
Saturday 03/10 – Saturday 24/10

During the lockdown due to the unprecedented pandemic of SARS-CoV-2, Ngallery made an open call for participation in an art project with the sole prerequisite being long-distance collaboration. Composers, musicians, artists, performers, directors, writers, scientists and intellectuals from all over the world were invited and challenged to create collaborative works, overcoming the impossibility of physical presence in the same space.

In an era of pandemics and natural constraints with uncertain outcome, The New Together project aims to bridge the physical distance between artists, intellectuals, scholars and scientists, in order to explore and define the new conditions of artistic creation, the new needs for communication between creative people and new possibilities for the presentation and diffusion of art.

Ngallery's open call was enthusiastically received and led to the creation of 12 collaborative works, which will be presented in different exhibitions. The first edition of The New Together presents the following works:

George Kokkinaris x Anna Mouzaki
“Lock OUT_BLACK down”
Nani Ballestrini's "Blackout" is a poem about light and darkness. It unfolds the political and historical events of post-war Italy, the 1977 blackout in New York and elements of Ballestrini's personal life. The writing methodology used by the Italian formalist to reconstruct fragments of public speech urges readers-musicians Giorgos Kokkinaris (double bass, composition, narration) and Anna Mouzaki (voice, composition, sound processing) to decipher and re-interpret them in a form of an opera aperta for female voice, narrator, double bass and electronics.

Zan Berry x Iason Maroulis
“Διά Δύο (/2)”
In this composition by Iason Maroulis, cellist Zan Berry is asked to divide himself in two instruments, voice and cello. Both lines work together, trying to create an amalgam through the combination of similar sounds, enriching and giving new character to the sound of each other.

Chryssanthi Kouri x Mislav Režić
“This Is How I Remember It”
This music and video collaboration explores the texture of memory and reminiscence. Responding to a musical piece on a loop, that slowly builds to a crescendo, the visual component develops through layers of natural elements that represent thoughts and images to mirror the texture of reminiscence, as our memories follow one after another in a free association sequence.

Tim Tsang x Noisebringers
“Don't touch my strings”
A puppet show, with umbrella wallpaper, where Zwickmühle subjects and objects come across a combination of performative logics archaeozoology as a co-existing desmopressin quandary, not necesslong_haired_cheesearily in synonymous agreement. (This has yet to be synonymous)

https://www.facebook.com/HuddersfieldNoisebringers/

Patrick Behnke x Lina Andonovska
“Interweaving” (supported by Goethe-Institut)
This score is conceived of as an activity that we can participate in together, regardless of time and distance. Viola player Patrick Behnke and multi-flute player Lina Andonovska recorded many experimental takes of the score via webcam and emailed recordings from their respective locations of Los Angeles and Frankfurt from June through August 2020. The activity (score + players + intended and unintended relationships) is an attempt to examine structures of orientation in time, in space, and between people, and to examine the relationships of different possibilities of motion and listening to one another. The collaborative aspect is essential to this process, and the worlds and timings of Behnke and Andonovska come together in this unique project. In the audio recordings created by Behnke and Andonovska, outside and inside sounds from their recording locations can be heard, such as ambulance sirens, creaking floors, wind, and other neighborhood sounds.

The exhibition "The New Together Vol. I" will be open by appointment from Saturday 3 to Saturday 24 October, with free admission. For appointments please contact us by email at ngallery18@gmail.com. To fully experience all the works, the minimum recommended duration of the visit is one hour. Ngallery will operate in accordance with the government pandemic guidelines.

Tim Tsang and Noisebringers' work “Don't touch my strings” will be livestreamed on Saturday, October 24, while all the works will be available online after the end of the exhibition on Ngallery's website.

Long -distance collaborative project organised and curated by Ngallery

CALL FOR WORKS

As the physical distance between us and other people, places and everything that constitutes our daily routines grows larger, so does the need of a creative person to keep creating new works and feel connected with the world. In response to this, ngallery is organising a call for artists, thinkers and scholars from all disciplines to collaborate from a distance and produce new works which will be presented online. The only prerequisite is that the collaboration between participants does not require their simultaneous physical presence, but occurs strictly by distance. There is no particular theme or duration for the works. Since it is not known how many of you will respond to this call it is not known how many online events will be required to present the works. However, for practical purposes there are 3 distinct categories in which you may apply.

Ngallery will curate this project by linking the participating artists with each other and with the overall programming of the works. The works will be presented at the physical space of ngallery (with or without audience depending on the situation at the time) and will be available online. There is no funding for this project, either for the creative or the organisational side.  However there is a strong wish to fundraise in order to document the works of this project after it is completed.

CATEGORY 1: COMPOSERS & PERFORMERS

One composer will be linked to one performer to create a new work, by distant collaboration. The performer will preferably video-record the piece. If video recording is not possible then a sound file will suffice.

How to apply:

All interested composers and soloists should send an e-mail (ngallery18@gmail.com) putting in the subject line the category you are interested in (eg. CATEGORY 1). Please send one sample of your work and a very short text describing what you wish to do in this project (150 characters max). In this way, we can get an idea of your artistic goal and try to make interesting links between composers and performers. If there are more than one performers living in the same space (ie. roomates, family, collective) and they wish to form an ensemble, this is also possible.

CATEGORY 2: SOUND & OTHER ARTS

One sound artist will be linked to one artist from a different discipline to create a new work, by distant collaboration. All artistic disciplines apply in this category, eg. video, poetry, painting, dance, acting, architecture, radio performance, etc. and they should be able to provide the end performance as video.

How to apply :

All interested artists should send an e-mail (ngallery18@gmail.com) putting in the subject line the category you are interested in (eg. CATEGORY 2). Please send one sample of your work and a very short text describing how you would like to contribute to this project (150 characters max). In this way, we can get an idea of your artistic goal and try to make interesting links between artists.  If there are more than one artists living in the same space (ie. roomates, family, collective) and wish to form a larger group, this is also possible.

CATEGORY 3 : OPEN

This is the most open category where artists, thinkers and scholars can apply. Any combination is possible and welcome, from a lecture and a collaboration on a scientific paper to a podcast, a children’s story, a discussion etc.

How to apply :

All interested applicants should send an e-mail (ngallery18@gmail.com) putting in the subject line the category you are interested in (eg. CATEGORY 3). Please send one sample of your work and a very short text describing how you would like to contribute to this project (150 characters max). Please note that because CATEGORY 3 is the most open of all, we kindly ask you to be as clear as possible regarding your ideas of what you wish to create. You may also let us know what you have in mind in terms of the discipline you wish to be linked to, although we cannot guarantee that this will be possible.

DEADLINES

Deadline for submitting your interest in the project: April 10th , 2020

Starting date of the collaboration: April, 20th, 2020

Deadline for completed works: June 15th, 2020

Good luck to all, stay at home and keep creating!!

Open Call for projects 2018/2019 season : Noise, Silence, What Now

For its first season of activity, N gallery invites musicians, artists, scientists, scholars and creators across diverse disciplines to submit their proposals for projects to be presented during the season October 2018 - June 2019.  It is desirable that the proposed projects explore the theme Noise, Silence, What Now.  Traditionally, silence and noise are thought of as two ends belonging to the same continuum, naturally leading us to think of them as a dipole.  However, the redefinition and blurring of the boundaries of these concepts - whether pertaining to sound, image, data, society, architecture, environmental and urban factors - is a fertile ground for the making of new concepts and creations, for problem posing and solutions.  Works and proposals of all formats that the gallery is able to host, are welcome.

Deadline for submissions : Closed

Types of projects : small - scale exhibitions and performances, workshops, screenings, lectures etc

Funding is not available.  Participants will have to cover their travel/accommodation and other expenses

N gallery provides the space and its available equipment upon agreement

Size of available space : approx. 80 m2

[Performance]
18:20-18:50 ising project

The ISING project is a three part multimedia project. Moving between the concert hall, the polar ice cap, and the gallery, the cycle employs sound, sculpture, video, and photography to convey the power and responsibility of every human to shape our world. This project makes visible how our existence - our breath innervates the national geography both in a beautiful and terrifying way.

The project’s name is derived from the scientific term used in statistical mechanics. Ising is a model that tries to imitate behavior in which individual elements modify their behavior so as to conform to the behavior of other individuals in their vicinity. It is applied in many other fields of science where the individual elements can be atoms, protein folds, a biological membrane, animal species in groups, social behavior, etc.

The first component of the tryptic is a multi continent concert tour. Ahead of the tour, Pangalou will disseminate the Ising project as a whole, in its content as well as in its structure to local climate change activists, NGOs, and new music ensembles.

The second component of the cycle is a 21 day performance piece at the North Polar ice cap. During this performance, Pangalou will retrieve a piece of ice that has detached from a local iceberg and place it on a platform. For the next 21 days, Pangalou will sing to the ice - a body of water in a different form. The artist intends to formulate a sculpture with the warmth of the exhalation created by singing. The performance is based on an interactive score, depending on the data of the environment.

The third component of the Ising tryptic will be a second multi continent concert tour in which Pangalou will perform with her live voice against an electronic new music composed environment generated from both the sounds made to sculpt the ice as well as music formed by the data she gathered from her in situ performance.

[02022020.SPACE | Athens is made possible by N Gallery]

--------------------------
// ABOUT THE PROJECT //
02022020.SPACE is a collective art project in response to our next palindrome date, 02-02-2020. Artists that work with diverse artforms are invited to create works exploring the hidden meanings of the date in relation to our society, culture and our planet, not limited to the impact of the once-in-a-lifetime event, but also the attraction of highly repetitive and reversible numeric effects, and the global influence of timezones.

The most brilliant cultural highlights of recent times have involved people broadcasting ideas in innovative ways, with web-based technology becoming one of the major elements in our daily life. 02022020, also a 8-digit computer-friendly code, is ideally situated in the Internet culture, ushering in the new vision of information exchange in the nearest future. On 02-02-2020, a collective of artists will create a 26-hour programme of artworks and performances that will be streamed on the Internet for viewers in all timezones. The Live performances with local audience are presented in 10+ cities around the world. The audience will also see the streaming of the performances and artworks in other locations.

The whole project embraces the concept of time-zones. Each time-zone enters the day sequentially. Currently 38 time-zones are being used on our planet including all offsets of 30/45/60 minutes. Wherever you will be on the 2nd of February, there will be one art work or performance released at 20:20 in the evening in every time-zones. The works can take many forms including, live performances, installations, recorded works or artworks created in a web-based form. Audience can follow all the time-zone events on our website 02022020.space from the first one UTC+14 to the last UTC-12, experiencing total 26 hours of art events that unveil the maximum potential of the day.

Apart from sitting at home and watching the whole event on the Internet, the audience can also go to the venue where the Live performances are presented and watch the streaming programme with other audiences.

Συναυλία: The Sadly Unknown

NOISE, SILENCE, WHAT NOW #4

Odeya Nini - July 3rd 17:30 - 21:30

Free the Voice Workshop 17:30 - 19:30

A Solo Voice Performance 20:30 - 21:30

Free The Voice

The Voice is an instrument that radiates from the soul, resonates in the body, and is pure energy and touch. Harnessing the energy of the Voice is a strength that is felt deep within ourselves and heard loudly outside of ourselves.

This workshop is dedicated to Vocal Expression, sensing the voice, feeling and understanding the physicality of sound, freeing our minds of preconceived ideas of song, and realizing the transformational healing effects we have on ourselves and others when we use our voice with intention and love. Both through introspective work and outward playfulness, we will explore the voice as an instrument that radiates from the imagination, body and movement, not limited to conventions of language, but rather able to convey myriad forms of communication.

www.voicebath.com

A Solo Voice

Evolving over the last seven years, A Solo Voice by Odeya Nini is an investigation of extended vocal techniques, resonance and pure expression, exploring the relationship between mind and body and the various landscapes it can yield. The work is a series of malleable compositions and improvisations that include field recordings and theatrical elements, aiming to dissociate the voice from its traditional attributes and create a new logic of song that is not only heard but seen through movement. Through multi-dimensionality that serves to both provoke and soothe in abstract communication, the voice is presented in its spectrum of natures as it travels through cultures, ages, emotions and colors, like photographs, with tender intimacy and bold aberrance.

Grzegorz Marciniak - Knots

May 12th, 2019 / Open rehearsal 13:00-15:00

May 13th, 2019 / Talk & concert : 19:00-22:00

KOHMA || Live + Experimental Turntablism Workshop - March 3rd, 2019

Exᴘᴇʀɪᴍᴇɴᴛᴀʟ Tᴜʀɴᴛᴀʙʟɪsᴍ Wᴏʀᴋsʜᴏᴘ (17:00-19:00):

KOHMA – Fʀᴇᴇ Iᴍᴘʀᴏᴠɪsᴀᴛɪᴏɴ (20:00-21:00):

Το Ιούνιο του 2018 κυκλοφόρησε το πρώτο προσωπικό του άλμπουμ με τίτλο «Touch - 8 Improvised Stories for Solo Double Bass».
